How do you inspire children to care about the environment?
Key Information

Challenge

Eco-Schools wanted to make every school in the country sustainable and activate behaviour change in young people. They needed to rethink their school's proposition in order for as many children as possible to get involved.

Approach

We held in-depth interviews and group interviews with pupils and teachers across primary and secondary school institutions. Our objective was to understand what the drivers for engagement were and then to explore how we could bring them to life in the Eco-Schools programme. The children were able to exercise their need to get involved in actively saving the planet!

Outcome

Our recommendation led to a broad range of successes. Increased student leadership skills, a greater number of children engaged, more schools than ever participating in the scheme, and perhaps most interestingly, many schools reporting improved social relationships within their school, as a result of increased affiliation with the natural environment.
