Comixit! was developing a comics app for children aged 7–12, designed to make reading digital comics intuitive, playful, and creatively empowering. They asked us to explore how children and parents interacted with early prototypes, and to shape the user experience into something both exciting for kids and reassuring for families.
The team needed to pinpoint what makes a digital comics experience truly work: how kids want to discover and read stories, what features keep them coming back, and how parents can feel confident that the app is safe, purposeful, and worth paying for. With Disney already secured as a partner, Comixit! also needed insights that would not only refine the product but demonstrate genuine user appeal.
We designed in-person co-creation workshops with friendship pairs of children and their parents, creating a natural space to explore reading habits, expectations, and creative desires. Using interactive Figma prototypes, we observed how kids navigated different discovery options, tested reading flows, and responded to features such as rewards, customisation, and creative tools. Parents offered parallel reflections on safety, usability, and educational value, helping us balance kids delight with safety and trust.
The research revealed clear priorities for development - from seamless vertical scrolling and playful discovery pathways to features that encourage creativity, sharing, and repeat use. We translated these into a confident design roadmap for the team providing clear direction on what elements to focus on, and in which order. These outputs gave Comixit! both the clarity to refine their app and create a brilliant comics app that inspires kids to become readers for life!We designed in-person co-creation workshops with friendship pairs of children and their parents, creating a natural space to explore reading habits, expectations, and creative desires.
